Food Safety
I often get asked if the Kintsugi repaired pot is food safe.
The traditional method of Japanese Kintsugi repair involves the use of urushi—a natural resin derived from trees. When this method is used, it is food safe, waterproof, and heat proof.
The modern methods of repair utilize other materials instead of natural resins to expedite the process. Here is a list of approved adhesives from the FDA, which do not include cyanoacrylate (super glue). Some sources will state that once resin epoxy and super glue is cured, it is stable and food safe. Other sources will state that toxins may leech under moisture or heat. Erring on the side of caution, I recommend items repaired using the modern methods be for decorative uses only.
